A pop-up café offering an array of morning delights for public and performers based at the Norwich Arts Centre during the Norfolk & Norwich Festival!

Simon Floyd and Amanda Coleman (the cafe hosts) invited me to create some impromptu site specific sound-based works for the morning on the 16th May.

The first piece was a four minute field recording (on an endless loop tape) of a busy café in the city centre being played back through a disposable coffee cup. Visitors placed the plastic mouthpiece to their ear to hear the recording.
Two microcassette recorders were also on hand for capturing noise in the kitchen, chatter and background music which was played back at random to visitors. One lucky café visitor heard snippets of his breakfast being prepared before it was served!

Lastly visitors had the opportunity to have a Sound Art Breakfast Experience thanks to a contact microphone attached to the underside of their plate. The microphone captured cutlery making contact with the plate which was fed through a delay pedal connected to a mini amplifier, this generated a pleasing range of rhythmic noises which delighted and intrigued. Check out the video below to see this in action:
