I was inspired by the work Eric Leonardson to create my own version of his experimental electroacoustic percussion instrument the ‘Springboard’. The Springrack is built from humble everyday items: an upside down metal cooling rack, scrap wood and coil springs from a desktop lamp. A single piezo disc contact microphone is attached on the underside of the instrument enabling all inaudible vibrations to be amplified. Just from plucking, gently rubbing, striking and bowing the springs with practise a fantastic array of different sounds and tones can be created. Not only was this an incredibly low cost instrument to build (£3.50) further sound making items can be easily attached expanding it’s sonic potential.
